why do people support sports teams so religiously? what do they get out of it? all they do is lose their money?

to a sports franchise. the time and money they spend on supporting a sports team they could be improving their life in some way shape or form

A lot of people naturally like to Support something or follow a religion/team/idea. Its a release on life. Personally i don’t Support a football team i don’t like to follow anyone really other than myself.

Do you mean like using drugs or binge drinking? Its a hobby, a source of happiness and a temporary escape from life’s obstacles.

Why do people support religions so religiously? I guess it’s the same feeling when a friend or a loved one accomplishes something, you would feel proud. I’m just guessing, I’m not into sports personally.

Everyone has something they follow, for some people it’s sport.

I was thinking about that recently, it’s very curious on the face of it - there seems to be so much invested in the support for a team - not just money but emotion, feeling.
The conclusion I came to is that many human beings seem to feel a very strong need to ‘belong’ to a group of like minded people. It is comforting when they are lonely and gives them strength when they feel alone and afraid. There’s a sense of camaraderie, friendship, but without any of the strings attached to being emotionally involved with people who are more a ‘real’ part of ones life.
Also - in a sense - the teams are like ‘toys’ they can be invested with all kinds of emotions and thoughts - ambitions and hopes - that the watchers may feel themselves, but cannot express. The sport - therefore - becomes a way of releasing their own tensions - by proxy.
Certainly - there is so much passion, and expression of profound emotion, sometimes - ( particularly for some of the Eastern european clubs, like Red Star, Belgrade ) that their mutual, collaborative support becomes almost an art form. (Supporters of the various Red Star sports teams are known as Delije (Serbian: Делије). A rough English translation might be "courageous and brave young men" or simply "The Heroes").
