Can Black College Football teams Compete with Traditionally Mixed 1-A College Football teams?
This is my controversial question of the day. There are several diffrent levels of College Football , and several diffrent types of fans. (This is in no way an attemp to disrespect any other college or level of college athletics). I was at a Historically black college football game in ATL a while back, and it was FAMU vs Tennessee St. Well being that i’m an SEC guy, and are a fan of big time college football, I was kinda entertained at the game but not really that into it because of the level of competition on the field. A female friend of mine was upset because I wasn’t and I made the comment that this wasn’t Alabama vs Auburn therefore it was good for it’s level but wasn’t as exciting as the Iron Bowl.
She Got upset because not only was I not really entertained, but I was texting my bro asking for the score on my teams game which I was missing and that was my Tennessee Vols vs the Florida Gators. Well she made the comment well hell We (Tennesse St. ) Would beat Tennesse all day, and as I laughed my behind off I told her that your Sawc champions Couldn’t stand up to a 1 A footballs worst team, and referred to the game Where Southern University (Swac champions ) attempted to play Tulane an 0-11 team at that year and was slaughtered I think 67 to 14 that year in an Epic Stomp.
In alot of other cases traditional Black College teams with amazing records the champs at that have tried to play early season games against traditionally mixed devision 1 A college football teams that are useually the worst in 1A football with dismal records, and yet the Black College team gets destroyed, and it even becomes the homecoming game or viewed as warm up games for these schools by the teams in 1A football.
So my questions to you guys is
1.Can HBCU football teams compete with 1A Trdiational Football teams?
2. What are the reasons that come into factor for them either being able or not able to compete? (Do not bring race into the mix)!
3. Which has the all around better players IE Smarter, Stronger, more skilled, and tougher players. HBCU or 1A College football teams?
4. My last question What is the diffrence bettween HBCU Football Traditonal 1A College football in the level of competition?
I respect college football no matter the confrence or level, I only prefer 1 A big time football, with confrences such as the SEC,Big 12 and so on. I was called a sell out by one girl because I said that I wouldn’t play for an HBCU over a mixed school becauase of my own personal reasons such as level of competition, and exposer on a bigger scale. I love the Magic City classic in my hometown of Birmingham Al, but in no way would I even place a red cent on Alabama St (Go Hornets) to even cover the spread against the UAB Blazers in a football game!
I know that so many greats in the NFL have come from HBCU schools but it was because they had something speacial about them to go to that level and shine, but this is only about the College level not the pro!
But you guys let me know what you think about these levels of college football and please keep race, and negative comments out.
Overall there is no competition between traditional HBCU football teams and other division 1 teams. Your best HBCU teams would be mediocre when compared with other D1 teams. The main reason is the D1 teams sre recruiting the best athletes now. Back in the 50s and 60s the best (Black) athletes were going to the black schools, especially in the south. My father played ball at a HBCU in Atlanta and he told me that back then FAMU would beat the brakes off of FSU and U of Miami on a regular basis. Every now and then you get a Jerry Rice or a Steve McNair (RIP) that will go to a HBCU but for the most part all the best athletes will go to the best programs, because the best programs can afford to have the best equipment and facilities. They get the big tv deals so the athletes will be on national tv on a regular basis, and they will be able to travel all over the country to play in the big bowl games every year.

no the best player go to the big schools. HBCU schools are too small or lack the funds to keep up with the SEC, USC, UTs of the world.

I think most of the Black College Football teams really don’t care, because some schools want to stay the way they are. They will continue to get a few quality athletes, but Face the Facts, The larger schools have much more to offer a quality Black Athlete. A athlete will not only have to prove himself in his division, but will have to compete in an all star game if lucky enough to make it there. Average to good athletes mostly make some sort of an All star game and the Scouts see most of them. Otherwise smaller Universities the athlete will have to walk-on and have their work cut out to earn a position, that’s what its all about.
