How do you know if you are slowly losing your mucous plug or if you are are just having a thick discharge?

Last night I went to the restroom and there was about a pinkie sized clear clot of snot looking stuff. All day today I've had a little clear looking stuff but nothing thick. I know the mucous plug can come out slowly over a few weeks but how do you know if you've started losing the mucous plug or if it's just a hormonal discharge? I know that when it's tinged with blood but what about in the beginning when it's not?

Discharge does get heavier and more often as you approach your due date. It's normal to lose some of your plug, but if it's just a piece, it regenerates itself. When you actually lose your whole plug, it is a really large amount of "snot-like", bloody stuff. There is really no question once you lose it.

Out of 4 children, I only lost it once before labor started, the other three weren't until right before delivery.

It could be a few things:
    yeast infection
allergic reaction (new undies, soap or pads?)
a small portion of your plug loosening
    extra hormones (from sex?)
If you start to feel dry, itchy or see evidence of brown (old) blood, then make sure you call the doctor. Avoid sex until you talk with the doc, too, for your peace of mind. You will know when you lose the plug, but just for your peace of mind, avoid wearing absorbent pads, if you are nearing your due date. Most importantly, though, if you think you are beginning labor or if you think something is "wrong", call your doctor or midwife. You may want to keep a journal so that you can explain your concerns when you call/visit without sounding like a nut (don't worry about bugging a doctor - they've heard it before!)
Congradulations and may your birth be a blessed one!

I had the same worries and it was a minor yeast infection. I ate lots of yogurt for the rest of my pregnancy and it didn't recur. I never lost my plug before being induced. 3 kids and the best indicator is still how mom feels.
