Indeed. In my country we call our national game football, and we call soccer, soccer, gridiron, gridiron and rugby, rugby. Why should soccer have the privilege of universally being called football?

Well, in ancient Britain during the time of the vikings there was a ship named the Phutbhall. Now it is not uncommon for sports to start with human heads and the game they played on this ship was no exception. After a day of pillaging the vikings would play this game with any human heads they got. The rules were basically the same and they called this sport soccer. But most of the world used the name of the ship. And that is why England calls it football.
